Is there any way to avoid image skeletonization?

I am doing image analysis on the cellular cytoskeleton by imagej macro and the first thing my code does is skeletonization to find the fibers of the cell. But I loose some data in the skeletonization. Is there any way to find fibers without skeletonizing the image?
For example this image which i found in a paper:
1
is skeletonized to this:
1_minErr.tif (57.9 KB)
and fibers are found.which obviously lost a lot of its features. Is there any way to avoid skeletonization and use other method to find fibers?
In this question I am specifically talking about skeletonization and how I can substitute with other method.
