Image accessibility / legibility: published images are often suboptimal

Dear Community,

for data management is critical that published images are accessible and reusable; Maybe our screening data on this is therefor of interest to you. In top10 journals in 3 sections of biomedicine we found that:

  • up to 70% of images lack complete scale information
  • up to 50% of images have no/poorly marked insets
  • up to 50% are not color-blind save
  • figure legends insufficiently explain colors, annotations, species etc.

Keep this data in mind for teaching to novice users!
Paper on Biorxiv, currently under review with PLOS Bio.

Very, very interested to have maybe zoom with those interested!
