How to determine the maximum 3D image/stack size I can open in ImageJ?

I don’t know why I can’t find any information on this. I must be looking in the wrong places.

When I stitch my stacks they downsample. I would like to downsample the stacks first then stitch them, but I can’t figure out what size to downsample them too first before stitching.

Any help is much appreciated

I found some old answers stating that the limit for an image is 2 gigapixels (GP) or 46341*46341 = 2,147,488,281 pixels.

I have yet to try it, but I will leave that here in case anyone needs it.

Hi @silverbulletxd,

Yes usually the maximal size for a 2D plane is 2G pixels in ImageJ since it is the maximal size of an array in java. Maybe you can have bigger 2D plane using ImgLib2 library.

Best,

Thomas
