Fiji - "Make substack" throws exception on 16 bit image, converting to 8 bit makes planes identical

Hello,
I have a large tiff image (converted from .ims) with 4 channels, 900 time-points and 26 slices, 16 bit size - 35,3 Gb. I import it with Bio-importer using split channels option and use only the brightfield. For my script to work I need to be able to make substacks.

I have two problems:

  1. Making substack on this image throws the following exception:

(Fiji Is Just) ImageJ 2.1.0/1.53c; Java 1.8.0_66 [64-bit]; Windows 10 10.0; 377MB of 480944MB (<1%)

  1. Converting the image to 8 bit (using Image > Type > 8-bit) solves the issue Nr 1, but makes every single plane in every single time point identical to t=1, z=1.

Any ideas how can I solve either of the two?
Thanks in advance.

*I know there seems to be a tread with a similar issue to my problem Nr1 but since it didnt get answered, I thought I ll mention it again.
