CP not able to start

Hi everyone,

Cellprofiler was working well on my MacMini.
Since last week CP is not able to open anymore…

We found this error massage and I hope someone can help me to fix this problem.

Hi Anna,

I’m not certain what the issue is, but the first step I suggest is to trash the CellProfiler configuration files, which might have gotten corrupted. Please see this FAQ: viewtopic.php?f=14&t=806&start=15#p12720

thank you for your reply…
Me and my boss tried to find this configuration files, but could not find any files named ~/Library/Preferences/CellProfilerLocal.cfg
Now we updated the Mac to version 10.10.3 and tried again to reinstall CP… the same problem as before.

in systemLog there comes this massage when I try to start CP:

Hi Anna,

Be sure to note that the tilde character “~” represent your user directory, like “/Users/Anna”. You really should have a cfg file named /Users/<YOUR_USER_NAME>/Library/Preferences/CellProfilerLocal.cfg

If that doesn’t help, would you please send the info (screenshot is ok) of the window when you click [Apple icon in upper left of main GUI] -> About This Mac. Is this a particularly old machine?

…we got the same problem now with an other Mac.
After changing the preferences Cellprofiler does not start anymore…
and reinstalling is not solving the problem!

And about your previous quesion: there is no library-folder under user/ahegele… we made some
screenshots:

Hope to get an idea to solve the problem!

Hi Anna,

Thanks for the debugging info. The configuration file is hidden, such that you can’t see it in Finder. You can either follow directions like these to see the file in Finder, or more simply use the Terminal app (see below).

First, close CellProfiler. Then launch Terminal and type

cd ~/Library/Preferences ls -l CellProfilerLocal.cfg
(Note the tilde in front of the Library folder - this indicates it is the Library folder in your USER directory, not the Library folder within the root folder of the whole machine)

then move the file to a safe, backup location (just in case we need it later):

mv ~/Library/Preferences/CellProfilerLocal.cfg ~/CellProfilerLocal.cfg.BACKUP
which moves the file to your /users/ directory.

It wouldn’t be a bad idea to reboot at this point since you’re having trouble, though normally it is not necessary. Try launching CellProfiler. Does that work now?
