Augmenting or coloring an area of pixels that seem to trend in the same direction

Aerosols are known to change the polarization of light. I am studying monochrome polarized sky images (Stokes parameters S1 and S2) and looking for very faint traces of aerosols present in vertical plumes, typically found below clouds, but not visible to the human eye. I think I can see an increased vertical orientation of pixels. Is there some feature of ImageJ or Fiji that will color these pixels or maybe just darken them to make them stand out more in the image? I have already used histogram enhancement of contrast on these images but need to see more clues. Thanks for any thoughts on this. Please see image attached.
