Assign LUT color according to z-level


I was wondering (and couldn’t find on my own) if there is a way for a LUT to use z-level information, rather than intensity?

What I have in mind would be to threshold a channel and then assign, for example, Rainbow LUT to the channel, which should then color the binary channel according to the z-level.

I hope that this description makes sense.
